Insane movie review . Play, Forrest, play

Russian chamber light melodramas have been coming out quite curiously lately. Last year, a decent number of interesting and sincere Russian films graced my list of the best films of the year. This year, I wanted to have a similar marathon. But somehow I didn’t find anything really interesting. The only one that came up was Insane .

Cool personal and powerful dramas in general are not that hard to figure out. Personally, the poster says a lot to me. In the case of Abnormal, I immediately realized that this is fate, and to miss such a movie is not worth it. And it turned out really well, but the movie failed to touch me to the core.

The movie is based on real events. A boy named Kolya is considered by everyone to be abnormal, and he also has a congenital disease, so that he can hardly move and perform any motor skills. In the life of his mother happens the main character Yuri, who decides to help the boy get back on his feet. So it’s kind of like Temporary Difficulties, but an adequate version.

And the movie is actually quite strong and dramatic. The main show here is made by a father and son (for convenience I will call them that). Both are interesting characters with their own storyline. You empathize with the boy in a human way because of empathy. You empathize with the father because he put so much effort into curing his son, who is not even his own.

And Insane combines drama in two aspects at once. On the one hand, it is a drama about overcoming, where a character with a disease tries to overcome it, in which he gets help. On the other hand, it is a drama about a father who realizes his desires through his son. And the most interesting thing is that it is a non-linear story with two time periods echoing together.

Personally, I liked the dilemma of Alexander Yatsenko’s character better. He is a good man who wanted to genuinely help. And he really did help. However, his fatherly qualities raise some questions. And the ending plays up this point in a very cool way. It seems to be standard, but sincerely. That’s why it’s really touching.

Personally, my only downside is that the problem is deep and interesting, but it just didn’t move me personally to tears. I’m not saying the drama didn’t work, but it worked just fine. I didn’t have a similar problem, so the movie just wasn’t for me. So once again I want to praise it, because even so, I enjoyed it. And if it’s not for me, I’m usually pretty bored.

All in all, Insane is a pretty atmospheric and enjoyable movie that has been lacking this year. It feels very chamber and personal, which is nice. Especially for a domestic film. I would give it a 7 out of 10, however I highly recommend it for viewing.
