The worst movies of 2024

- Pool cleaner
- Rumors
- Reagan
Let’s summarize the results of the past year and I want to present to you a selection of the worst movies that came out in 2024. These are the works that are not just mediocre or hopelessly bad, but they are the real nightmares of the movie industry. These are the movies that shock you with their incompetence and boredom, make you squirm in your seat and take you into a dark abyss of unbearable boredom.
The approach to picking the worst movies will be based on the critical standards that turn a bad movie into a truly awful spectacle. So, without further ado, I present the Top 10 movies that really earned their place on this sad list of failures.
Pool cleaner
IMDb Rating: 4.0\nDuration: 1 hour and 40 minutes\nGenre: Comedy\nOriginal title: Poolman\nYear: 2024\nCountry: USA\nDirector: Chris Pine\nStarring: Chris Pine, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito, Annette Bening
Even if you’re a devoted Chris Pine fan, watching this Los Angeles noir-style failure will likely leave you stunned. The movie, which Pine directed, wrote and starred in, is a chaotic spectacle. His character is a frumpy, disheveled pool cleaner, a sort of Dude (hello from The Big Lebowski ), only with the constant feeling that his brain is slowly leaking out through his ears.
Chris doesn’t so much build scenes as throw random, not-fully-funny jokes and inarticulate innuendos at the viewer, submerging it all into a mysterious plot.
Rumors
IMDb Rating: 5.1\nDuration: 1 hour and 44 minutes\nGenre: Comedy, Black Humor, Drama\nOriginal title: Rumours\nYear: 2024\nCountry: Canada, Germany, Hungary, USA\nDirector: Evan Johnson, Galen Johnson, Guy Maddin\nStarring: Cate Blanchett, Rolando Ravello, Charles Dance, Nikki Amuka-Bird
Some directors enjoy exceptional critical attention, becoming almost symbols of aesthetic excellence. Canadian experimental filmmaker Guy Maddin, master of surrealist films, is one of them. However, I must be honest: his work is not to my liking at all.
This movie, co-written with Evan and Gaylen Johnson, was an example to me of how low an artistic idea can fall. In the story, world leaders, led by Cate Blanchett’s character, who resembles Angela Merkel, gather at the G7 summit, but soon find themselves lost in the woods. There they begin to endlessly discuss everything in the world in an overly pretentious manner.
The political satire rapidly turns into a heavy and monotonous action, which is impossible not to get tired of. The movie seems to drag on and causes more irritation than interest.
Reagan
IMDb Rating: 6.2\nDuration: 2 hours and 21 minutes\nGenre: Biographical, Drama\nOriginal title: Reagan\nYear: 2024\nCountry: USA\nDirector: Sean McNamara\nStarring: Dennis Quaid, Penelope Ann Miller, Mena Suvari, Kevin Sorbo
This biopic about Ronald Reagan is more like a propaganda poster than an in-depth biographical movie. Released at an opportune moment to support Donald Trump’s triumph, it instantly won over audiences nostalgic for an era of formulaic television dramas.
Dennis Quaid, as if caught off guard by his role, portrays Reagan as a true fairy tale hero: radiant smile, bumbling you-know-what, and a singular goal: fighting communism. The entire plot revolves around this conflict, setting aside any historical accuracy. The picture shows Reagan as a cowboy superhero who almost single-handedly destroys communism.
All other aspects of his political career are presented so superficially that even the Iran-Contras scandal looks like nothing more than a conspiracy of villains against the benign Ronnie. Instead of reflection or analysis, the film is an insubstantial ode to praise, lacking both drama and complex internal conflicts.
The end of the world
IMDb Rating: 6.2\nDuration: 2 hours and 28 minutes\nGenre: Drama, Musical\nOriginal title: The End\nYear: 2024\nCountry: Denmark, Ireland, Germany\nDirector: Joshua Oppenheimer\nStarring: Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, George MacKay, Moses Ingram
Joshua Oppenheimer’s apocalyptic chamber drama-musical unfolds entirely in a confined space – a bunker designed as a luxurious underground home. The movie plunges into the atmosphere of frozen time, as if the hands of the clock had frozen.
Michael Shannon and Tilda Swinton play spouses: amoral parents of a wealthy family who have been hiding from a broken world in this luxury for two decades. Their dialog is filled with high-pitched lines, and occasionally the characters switch to singing. Shannon embodies an energy tycoon whose activities have probably led to the death of the planet.
While there are a few musical numbers in the movie that are noteworthy, most of them resemble failed drafts by Stephen Sondheim (composer of many Broadway musicals). This adds to the claustrophobic and overwhelming feeling of the plot, which, despite an abundance of ideas, treads water for 2 hours and 28 minutes.
Lisa Frankenstein
IMDb Rating: 6.1\nDuration: 1 hour and 41 minutes\nGenre: Comedy, Horror/Horror, Romance\nOriginal title: Lisa Frankenstein\nYear: 2024\nCountry: USA\nDirector: Zelda Williams\nStarring: Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Lisa Soberano, Jenna Davis
A horror-comedy with an outdated plot and overly campy atmosphere turns into a dreary spectacle. The story about a teenage girl who revives her dead boyfriend was written by Diablo Cody, but even her screenwriting style doesn’t save the movie from cliché.
The movie tries to combine elements of teen zombie drama, romance and slasher, but instead of a fresh idea, the viewer gets confusing, overloaded action. As a result, it feels like watching an overlong and completely unnecessary sketch from a late-night talk show.
Dogman
IMDb Rating: 6.8\nDuration: 1 hour 55 minutes\nGenre: Action, Crime\nOriginal title: Dogman\nYear: 2024\nCountry: France, USA\nDirector: Luc Besson\nStarring: Caleb Landry Jones, Jojo T. Gibbs, Christopher Denham, Clemens Schick
Luc Besson’s movie demonstrates how an initially interesting idea can turn into a chaotic spectacle. Caleb Landry Jones, known for his penchant for complex roles, here stars as a wheelchair-bound transvestite antagonist who is strangely able to control street dogs. On paper, this could have been something new, but the realization proved unconvincing.
The attempt to create a third-rate version of the Joker with a touch of eccentricity looks superficial. The plot seems confused and overdramatized, trying to evoke compassion for a character who literally grew up in a dog kennel. Instead of a deep portrait of trauma and struggle, the audience gets a simplistic and overstuffed melodrama.
Mickey’s Mousetrap
IMDb Rating: 2.5\nDuration: 1 hour and 20 minutes\nGenre: Slasher, Comedy\nOriginal title: Mickey’s Mouse Trap\nYear: 2024\nCountry: Canada\nDirected by: Jamie Bailey\nStarring: Simon Phillips, Sophie McIntosh, Madeleine Kelman, Ben Harris
Cultural icons are becoming available to the public after 95 years of corporate control. But unfortunately, this has so far only resulted in cheap slashers made by mediocre directors looking to make a quick buck without any effort. This year there was a sequel to Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey .
And now a group of Canadian filmmakers have made a depressing horror movie where a guy becomes a killer after watching Steamboat Willie . The movie is neither scary nor interesting, leaving only questions: why can characters teleport, and why do you scream when you see a man in a Mickey Mouse mask?
Not another church movie
IMDb Rating: 2.2\nDuration: 1 hour 30 minutes\nGenre: Parody, Comedy\nOriginal title: Not Another Church Movie\nYear: 2024\nCountry: USA\nDirected by: Johnny Mac\nStarring: Vivica A. Fox, Tisha Campbell, Wayne D. Stamps Jr. Stamps Jr., T’Shawn Barrett, Jamie Foxx, Mickey Rourke
In this parody movie, billionaire and talk show host Hopra Windfall uses her direct communication with God (Jamie Foxx) to get him to send a hero to help her save her dwindling ratings. In a panic, God decides to turn to the hardest working man in the world: Taylor Ferry (Kevin Daniels). Despite his lack of experience, God convinces him to do the impossible: write a successful movie. But the Devil (Mickey Rourke) is also in the game. And he has his own sinister plan to ruin it all.
Harold and the magic crayon
IMDb Rating: 5.7\nDuration: 1 hour 30 minutes\nGenre: Comedy, Adventure\nOriginal title: Harold and the Purple Crayon\nYear: 2024\nCountry: USA\nDirected by: Carlos Saldana\nStarring: Zachary Levi, Lil Rel Howery, Zooey Deschanel, Benjamin Bottani
The screen adaptation of Crockett Johnson’s book, where a boy draws whatever he wants and gets into adventures right before his eyes, offers a lot of creative possibilities for adaptation. I was full of hope when I heard Spike Jonze was involved in the project, thinking we were in for something similar to his short film with Daffy Daak. But instead, Sony again decides to go with an outdated concept used in Sonic: combining cartoon characters with the real world, turning Harold into an on-screen character played by Zachary Levi.
A rebellious moon
IMDb Rating: 5.6\nDuration: 2 hours 13 minutes\nGenre: Action, Fantasy\nOriginal title: Rebel Moon\nYear: 2024\nCountry: USA\nDirected by: Zack Snyder\nStarring: Sofia Boutella, Ed Skrein, Micheal Huisman, Charlie Hunnam
It’s hard to imagine a more pointless or unnecessary movie than Zack Snyder’s two-part copy of Star Wars, then bloated into a six-hour director’s cut. Snyder, known for his pop-culture remix style, presents a bloodier but strangely nonchalant version of the genre with Heavy Metal references and fight scenes featuring droids and half-naked female warriors. The movie is visually beautiful, but leaves very little to remember. Snyder tries to outdo his predecessors, but his obsession with superficial effects limits his creative freedom.
