An Oscar nomination that has been around since 2000, but never once played.

What if the categories aren’t 23, but are actually 24? And we’re not talking about combining nominations for Best Sound and Best Sound Editing in 2020.
The Golden Globes once already had such a nomination, but that was in the middle of the last century and it was relevant then, but now it is only in absentia at the Oscars and has never been cast.
Best Musical.
Academy Award for Best Original Musical.\nThis category was created in 2000 after the elimination of the Best Original Musical or Comedy Score category . So, with that being the case, it should have left Best Musical and Best Musical, respectively. But the problem is that it was never awarded in its current form for the most trivial of reasons: there were not enough musicals from which to choose the best.
It’s very simple math.\nIf there are ten musicals nominated for an award, then you have to choose that ten, at least out of a hundred. Is ten too many? You can have five, but then you have to choose from at least fifty….. Unfortunately, even if we act according to the former regulations, as was the case with the nomination for makeup (only three applicants), even 30 for the year will not accumulate.\nThis is if we even omit the point that we would like to choose applicants not from what we have, but because of high qualifications and artistic features. In other words, just to have something to choose from.
For one year, or even after one year, of course, there are their own Les Misérables or La La Land, but in such cases the winner is obvious and without any Oscar…. Even if we take into account cartoons like Encanto or Coco’s Secret, it’s still not enough for a full-fledged competition.
For example, in 2024, musicals include Mean Girls (seriously?), Joker: Madness for Two (where there are no original songs), Nobody Knows and Maria – biopics about Bob Dylan and Maria Callas, respectively (without original songs, of course). That leaves Emilia Perez , Wicked and Moana 2 . Not much of a selection for the year’s best….
All these choices and the decision to launch or not to launch this category should be guided by the Executive Committee of the Academy’s Music Department. But apparently, over a quarter of a century, they have decided that there are not enough applicants and justification for activating this category. Although they noted immediately, back in 2000, that this category would not be presented annually. Probably anticipating a shortage of musicals…..
On top of that, the selection rules also narrow the field of applicants, because according to them, Best Original Musical (which is what the category sounds like) is determined as follows:
An original musical must consist of at least five original songs by one author or team of authors, either used as a voice-over (i.e., the song may be played during the end credits or just off-screen) or visually performed. Each of these songs must be meaningfully conveyed, clearly audible, intelligible, and must develop the storyline of the movie. An arbitrary group of songs that are not essential to the storyline will not be considered acceptable.
And while it’s well known that the Oscar for Best Picture goes to the producer, it was assumed that the statuette for Best Original Musical, the composer(s) and lyrics writer(s) would be the nominees, not the producer or director.\nWhich makes sense in principle…
